An heroic grandfather has narrowly missed being hit by a train after jumping onto tracks to save his baby granddaughter.

The man jumped onto tracks at Wentworthville, in Sydney's west, when a pram with his 18-month-old granddaughter inside rolled off the platform on Sunday.

The 62-year-old handed the toddler back to family but was forced to walk along the tracks to get back onto the platform, narrowly missing an oncoming freight train, police say.
