Great Barrier Reef second on Lonely Planet's must-see list

Ten Australian travel destinations have made the list of 500 must-see places ranked by Lonely Planet readers.

Queensland's Great Barrier Reef is one of the best places to visit in the world, according to Lonely Planet's Ultimate Travelist.

The reef is ranked second on the list of 500 of the most thrilling, memorable and interesting places in the world.

The Great Barrier Reef was beaten by the temples of Angkor in Cambodia.

Nine other Australian destinations also made the list, including the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road (12) and Hobart's MONA (20), which beat London's Tate Modern (52).

The list was complied from highlights found in every Lonely Planet guide book and was voted for by readers.
