Great Escape survivor dies aged 101

Australian airman Paul Royle, who escaped from the Stalag Luft III prisoner-of-war camp in 1944, has died in a Perth hospital aged 101.

It's believed there's just one survivor of World War II's so-called Great Escape left alive after Australian airman Paul Royle died aged 101.

Mr Royle was one of 76 prisoners who broke out of German prisoner-of-war camp Stalag Luft III in 1944.

Their feat was subsequently made into a feature film called The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen.

Mr Royle died on Sunday at Hollywood Hospital in Perth following surgery on a fractured hip, the ABC reports.

The 101-year-old was injured when he fell at an aged care facility.

"Dad continued to live his life to the full," the veteran's son, Gordon Royle, told the ABC.

"It was a fall that killed him in the end."

The broadcaster reports the sole remaining survivor of the March 1944 escape is 94-year-old British man Dick Churchill.
