Green Day play impromptu pub gig

Green Day filled a Sydney pub with fans shortly after announcing a Sydney gig on Twitter.

Rockers GREEN DAY stunned fans in Sydney, Australia on Thursday night by playing a tiny pub gig 45 minutes after announcing the show on Twitter.com.

The band took to the microblogging site at 10.15pm to announce they would be hitting the stage at The Captain Cook Hotel in Paddington at 11pm.

The message read: "hello Aussie! Green Day is playing tonight at a club called Captain Cook Hotel Tonight in Sydney. I repeat, Tonight! Feb 20th around 11pm."

Stunned fans dashed to the venue for the free gig and were thrilled when frontman Billie Joe Armstrong walked out on stage and said, "I guess a few of you saw the tweet."

The gig was a warm-up for the trio's Soundwave festival appearance on Sunday.
