US punk/rock band Green Day played a surprise one hour gig at the Captain Cook Hotel in Sydney on Thursday night ahead of their Soundwave performances.

Green Day slipped a secret show into their Australian visit with a surprise performance in Sydney on Thursday night.

The US punk/rock band popped over to the Captain Cook Hotel in Paddington for a one hour set.

Fans discovered the show via a post by singer Billie Joe Armstrong on Twitter.

"hello Aussie! Green Day is playing tonight at a club called Captain Cook Hotel TONIGHT in Sydney. I repeat, TONIGHT! Feb 20th around 11:00pm," he tweeted.

Green Day are in Australia to headline the Soundwave Festival which kicks off in Brisbane on Saturday.
