Green 'sabotage' crackdown bill due

The federal government is expected to introduce to parliament controversial changes to stop what it says is "green sabotage" of mining projects.

Legislation to stop environmentalists from blocking major projects will be introduced to parliament on Thursday.

The changes to environmental protection laws would remove the power of indirect third parties to take ministerial approvals to the courts.

The decision follows a Federal Court challenge that exposed the government's failure to properly consider two endangered species that could have been threatened by the $16.5 billion Carmichael coal mine in central Queensland.

The federal government has labelled such challenges "legal sabotage" and "lawfare".

Attorney-General George Brandis says only "vigilante litigants" who use courts as a political weapon to game the system instead of defending legitimate interests would be affected.

But the changes could struggle to gain support in parliament with Labor, the Australian Greens and key Senate crossbenchers against the proposal.

Independent senator Glenn Lazarus says he won't be supporting any change.

Fellow crossbencher Nick Xenophon has some "real reservations".
