Green says new fighter a risk to comeback

Danny Green has only a week to prepare for a new opponent after Tamas Kovacs pulled out of next week's fight with Argentine Roberto Bolonti coming in.

Danny Green admits he's taking a risk trying to prepare for a new opponent just a week out from his comeback fight.

The four-time world champion is already putting his reputation on the line by launching a return to the ring aged 42 and after a three-year hiatus.

But with his original opponent Slovakian Tamas Kovacs pulling out with a serious neck injury, Green has opted to draft in a new boxer rather than postpone the fight.

Looking for someone who was fight-ready, Green's camp called in Argentine slugger Roberto Bolonti, with Green predicting he would be in for an even tougher fight.

Bolonti fought two weeks ago, knocking out his opponent Venezuelan Williams Ocand to win the WBC Latino light heavyweight belt.

The 36-year-old's record is 36-3 and he's never been knocked out.

Green said it was difficult to change tack so late in training but he felt his experience would see him through.

"He's a completely different style of fight and that's where the difficulty comes in for myself and my trainer because we've got to change the plan we've had for the last eight weeks," Green said.

"We've been following that to a tee and it's been going really well with training and sparring but it's been turned on its head.

"I've got to go back to what I know best and that's been a fighter at heart and adjust and adapt."

Green said while Kovacs was a traditional boxer who moved around the ring and boxed from a distance, Bolonti "walked in throwing bombs".

"He's very unconventional and he's going to pose a problem because he's unpredictable and unorthodox and he's just come off a win so he's full of confidence."

Green admitted it was a risk to his comeback, which he hoped would lead to a re-match with long-time rival Anthony Mundine.

"It's definitely a little bit more risky because we haven't had much time to study and adapt," Green said.

"Bolonti is hard to put away, he's got a good chin and he's fought world class fighters and gone the distance so I'm preparing for 10 hard rounds."

Kovacs has a bulging disc in his neck which he hoped to manage through the fight but now requires surgery.
