In a major boost for professional cycling in Australia, the new team GreenEDGE has been granted a licence to compete with the world's elite teams next season.

It paves the way for the outfit to race on the World Tour and to enter the world's most prestigious race, the Tour de France.

Sport entrepreneur and business tycoon Gerry Ryan has promised his new road cycling team, GreenEDGE, will bring passion to the sport.

“This is exciting news... A lot of very hard work went into putting this team together,” he said.

The UCI's WorldTour features 14 stage races, including the three grand tours of France, Italy and Spain, plus 14 one-day classics.
