Greens preference Labor in Bennelong

Labor has been put ahead of the Liberals on the Greens' Bennelong how-to-vote card.

The Australian Greens will preference Labor ahead of the Liberal Party in the Bennelong by-election, giving the opposition an edge over the government.

At the 2016 federal election the Greens issued "open tickets" - not preferring one of the major parties over another - in 11 seats.

However, Greens candidate for Bennelong, Justin Alick, told AAP on Monday the party would put "progressive" parties such as the Affordable Housing Party and Science Party toward the top of the how-to-vote card, while placing Labor ahead of the Liberals.

"This election will be an opportunity for local voters to move beyond the failed promise and dismal politics of the Turnbull government, and choose a brighter future", Mr Alick said.

Labor is standing former NSW premier Kristina Keneally against sitting member John Alexander, who resigned over his dual citizenship.

There are 12 candidates in the December 16 by-election.
