Greens urge PM to appoint more women

The Greens say Prime Minister Tony Abbott needs to address his own failure to promote women in the government's ranks.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott's problems with women could be easily solved, the Greens say.

Mr Abbott on Saturday reflected on the Liberal Party's low levels of female representation and the need to make it less blokey.
Greens deputy leader Larissa Waters said rather than sounding bemused, Mr Abbott should consider his own failure to promote women, appoint more to his cabinet and give up his role as minister for women.

"Rather than sounding bemused about the low numbers of women Liberal MPs, Tony Abbott needs to take responsibility for it and start fixing it by immediately appointing more women to his Cabinet," she said.

“He also needs to give up the role of Minister for Women, which he has grossly failed in, citing his greatest achievement for women as repealing the carbon price.

“Instead, Tony Abbott should appoint a woman as Minister for Women, who is prepared to tackle discrimination and fix his mistakes."
