Greer savaged for Bishop question

Germain Greer has come under criticism after she asked Julie Bishop if she'd free her nipples to save the lives of the Bali Nine duo.

Genuine feminists should tear Germaine Greer apart for asking the foreign minister if she'd bare her nipples to save the Bali Nine duo from execution, media personality Derryn Hinch says.

Ms Greer left Julie Bishop shocked on the ABC's Q&A program on Monday night when discussion turned to the Free The Nipple campaign.

The campaign is a social media movement in which women go topless in public. It began as a protest against bans in the US on women exposing their breasts.

Host Annabel Crabb jokingly told the foreign minister she suspected Ms Bishop wouldn't be one to consider freeing her nipples on a daily basis.

Ms Bishop replied she'd never had the desire to do such a thing online, when Ms Greer interjected: "What if it got you the commutation of the life (sic) sentences for two Australians?"

The audience howled in response and Ms Bishop was left shaking her head, saying: "Please don't go there Germaine, please don't go there."

Hinch and One Nation founder Pauline Hanson have condemned Ms Greer's question, saying a woman who proudly wore the badge of feminist was damaging the cause.

"If a man had said that they would be crucified," Hinch told the Seven Network on Tuesday, adding he was far from a fan of Ms Greer who once accused him of killing someone.

"I hope the genuine feminists come out and tear her apart for this. It was obscene the way she put this to Julie Bishop ... who handled it pretty well under the circumstances."

Ms Hanson said the question was nothing short of crass.

"Totally out of line. I think it shows the type of person Germaine is. I think it was a dreadful question."
