Greg Inglis begins long road back to NRL

South Sydney have undergone a review of their on-field injury examination procedures after Greg Inglis played with an ACL tear last week.

South Sydney captain Greg Inglis has begun his long road back to the NRL after successfully undergoing a traditional knee reconstruction on Wednesday.

Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire confirmed his star fullback will be out for six months after surgeons opted for a hamstring regraft instead of the radical LARS procedure.

"We've got some very smart people in the background that are very thorough about decisions in which way we go with our surgery," Maguire told reporters on Thursday.

"And then obviously we had consulted a number of different surgeons and they chose the right way with going with the traditional way.

"Greg actually had his operation yesterday and the surgeons come back and said they had a really good operation and he should be on the mend very quick."

Inglis' surgery comes after Maguire ordered a review of their on-field injury examination procedure to ensure there won't be a repeat of the Inglis situation again.

He re-iterated doctors erred in their initial diagnosis of Inglis injury.

"Yes, it looked exactly what we all saw. But obviously when things are moving fast and you're getting information, at the time decisions were made," he said.

"Those sorts of things are now reviewed and we make sure those things don't happen again."

Maguire said the Inglis situation wouldn't impact the decision on whether to play halfback Adam Reynolds, who is a chance of an early return after appendicitis surgery.

Reynolds' insertion would be a huge boost for a Rabbitohs side that is also set to be without out-of-favour twins George and Thomas Burgess against Manly on Saturday.

Maguire said Reynolds would only take his place in the line-up if fully fit.

"Adam has obviously had to get his appendix sorted out. He's got surgeons and doctors that are looking at him all the time," he said.

"We'll make sure they're very thorough in what they need to do. I'm sure they will be. And if the decision is for him to play, he'll be 100 per cent right to go."
