Grey, animal prints hot trends for winter

Grey, animal prints and navy will be on trend as the weather cools. Don't forget to slip on a pair of ankle boots or ballet flats.

Grey is the shade of autumn/winter with a smart ankle boot and a chunky necklace to finish the look.

Navy, a touch of animal print or a great bomber jacket will also keep you looking on trend.

Impeccably styled in a black calf pencil dress by Scanlan Theodore, David Jones executive merchandise buyer Donna Player says grey is the shade of the season, noting the Camilla and Marc collection as a case in point.

"It works really well in suiting, sports luxe and casual wear," she said before helping judge a public model casting for the retailers' Melbourne Fashion Festival opening night show in March.

"Navy is also really important as a colour."

Bold, colourful prints will also be popular and animal print also adds interest.

"My advice is always wear one piece of animal, that's enough," she said.

"We are seeing that in everything from shoes to handbags, to jackets; it's a very strong trend this season."

Bomber jackets are another firm trend as the weather cools, while on your feet, ankle boots are hot.

"The ankle boot is really important and being worn back with dresses, as well as leggings," Player says.

"The ballet flat continues to be really strong ... and we are seeing a lot of grey coming through in footwear as well."

Player says a chunky jewelled necklace resting on your collar bone is the perfect way to finish an outfit, while coloured bangles and a statement watch are also stylish choices.

She was kept a keen eye on the 100 hopefuls at the public casting event on Tuesday. They were vying for the chance to strut the David Jones runway, alongside Jessica Gomes and Montana Cox.

Administration worker Josephine Sims, 21, said she decided to try out after a friend tagged her in the competition on Facebook.

"I was a bit hesitant at first but I thought, why not, I'll give it a shot."

Julian Haig, 25, was not told the casting was for women only, but was invited to walk for the judges anyway despite being the only man in the mix.

"These things happen," he said.

"I'm happy to be here."
