It's the Pennsylvania tradition to gauge whether spring will come early.

Punxatawny Phil, the creature immortalised in the Bill Murray movie 'Groundhog Day', has made his annual pre-dawn appearance in front of a crowd of hundreds.

According to his handlers, the furry rodent predicted six more weeks of winter.

Local tradition holds that if a groundhog pops out of the ground and sees his shadow on February 2nd, he'll stay underground for another six weeks, unofficially marking another six weeks of winter.
