Opposition Bill Shorten has dismissed growing voter support for a GST hike provided it comes with adequate compensation.

"You must live on another planet if you think people want to pay another 15 per cent in GST," Mr Shorten told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.

He also declined to comment on South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill's support for the GST to be broadened to financial services, saying the bushfire-hit state was going through a "difficult day".
