Guilty verdict in Tasmania's longest trial

A Supreme Court jury has found a 61-year-old man guilty of two murders to end Tasmania's longest running criminal trial.

Tasmania's longest running criminal trial has ended with a 61-year-old man being found guilty of two murders.

After a trial that lasted more than five months, a Tasmanian Supreme Court jury on Monday found Stephen Roy Standage guilty of the murders of Ronald Jarvis and John Thorn.

Mr Thorn, 59, was shot in the back of the head in August 2006 and his body was found about two kilometres from his car, parked on a property near Lake Leake in eastern Tasmania.

Standage, of Kalangadoo, was charged with his murder in February 2010.

Two years later, Tasmania's cold case unit charged Standage with the murder of Mr Jarvis, a 37-year-old fisherman.

He was last seen on July 1992 and his body was found in bushland at Nugent, in February the next year.

Detective Inspector Glenn Lathey thanked the police officers involved in the "complex" case, particularly the cold case unit, and other support staff for their dedication.

He said he hoped the verdicts brought some closure to the victims' families.

The trial before Justice Stephen Estcourt started in March and the jury retired to consider its verdict on Thursday.
