Guinea stampede death toll rises to 33

The death toll following a stampede at a rap concert in Guinea marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has risen to 33.

At least 33 people, including 11 children, have died in a stampede at a rap concert on a beach in the Guinean capital Conakry.

Police said the victims were trampled underfoot on Rogbane beach, in a northern suburb, as thousands surged to the exits after popular rap group "Instinct Killers" headlined a show on Tuesday to mark the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The death toll was raised from an earlier figure of 24.

The president's office said in a statement earlier that it was "shocked by the tragic drama caused by mass movements at a cultural event".

An investigation has been launched to determine what caused the tragedy.

The official in charge of organising such events was suspended.
