A gunman has died after he was shot by police in a Brisbane siege.
Police were first called to a block of units in Inala about midday (AEST) on Monday and a man produced a gun, regional duty officer Inspector Richard Kroon said.
Police closed off the surrounding area while they tried to negotiate with the man who was sitting in a car outside the block of units in Brisbane's south.
At about 3.45pm police had further interactions with the man, shots were fired and he was subsequently pronounced dead, Insp Kroon said.
Earlier it was reported the man was shot after he stepped out of the car holding a handgun.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the 42-year-old man was in a critical condition after being shot.
He later died.
Aerial news footage showed riot police gathering around a patient on a stretcher in a car park at the apartment complex.
Armed specialist officers were at the scene and an emergency declaration stretching hundreds of metres was declared.
The emergency declaration covered the area bounded by Comorant, Clipper, Brolga, Parakeet, Partridge, Wirraway, Kittyhawk streets and Inala Avenue, and members of the public were warned to stay away.
No one was evacuated.
Police have said there was nothing to suggest the incident was terrorism related.
