A salesman was trying to kill himself when he pulled two unloaded guns on police in a drug-induced psychosis, a Sydney court has heard.
Gregory Randall, 47, threatened three police officers with two unloaded guns in Mt Druitt on February 2012 and was shot in the abdomen after advancing on them yelling: "Shoot me, shoot me, or I will kill you."
A drug user since he was a teenager, Randall had taken half a gram of methamphetamine and was severely depressed at the time of the incident, the Parramatta District Court heard.
That morning, he'd phoned the Mt Druitt police station claiming his house had burnt down, before driving to the station and demanding the officer he had spoken to come out to meet him.
When she refused, he wouldn't go inside and instead drove to a shooting range where he stole two guns from a man by threatening him with a pair of pliers.
He then drove past a pub and aimed a gun at patrons sitting in the beer garden, yelling he had a "green light from police" to "sort out" gangs in the area.
Randall drove back to Mt Druitt police station and again demanded to see the officer he'd spoken to.
When he was eventually stopped, he pulled the guns on three officers and was shot.
He had pleaded guilty to four charges, including being armed with an offensive weapon, intending to assault a police officer and possessing unauthorised firearms.
In sentencing him on Friday, Judge Antony Townsden said Randall was genuinely sorry for "what can only be described as bizarre behaviour" and was trying to commit suicide by forcing the officer to shoot him.
He sentenced him to a maximum of five years and 11 months, with a non-parole period of three years and two months.
The court heard the police officer who fired on Randall was still haunted by flashbacks of the incident.
Given he's been in custody since the day of the incident, Randall will be eligible for release in April next year.
