Gupta offers some support for NEG

British industrialist Sanjeev Gupta has offered some support for the federal government's National Energy Guarantee.

Australia's energy market "is a mess" but the federal government's move to introduce the National Energy Guarantee will help bring differing groups together, British industrialist Sanjeev Gupta says.

As he launched a new solar farm project in Whyalla, Mr Gupta said that just like most large companies, his group was looking for certainty.

"Any policy which is finalised is better than uncertainty and ongoing ambiguity because that is what hurts business," he told reporters on Wednesday.

"The energy market is a mess, prices are high despite having all the raw materials. So everybody is very emotional about (it)."

Mr Gupta said Australia remained a great coal-producing country but there was also growing power generation from renewables.

He said that could lead to conflict and it was the "tough job" of government to bring the various players together into something that satisfied everybody.

"The most important thing is to come to a result," he said.

The NEG aims to deliver cheaper, more reliable power while lowering carbon emissions.

It requires energy producers to sign contracts agreeing to supply a minimum amount of energy that could be available at all times.

The electricity sold to consumers must have an average emissions level that meets Australia's carbon emissions reduction targets.
