GWS Giants to embrace hostile MCG crowd

GWS key forward Jeremy Cameron says a big crowd of Collingwood supporters at the MCG can help inspire his team during their AFL semi-final.

GWS key forward Jeremy Cameron insists a parochial pro-Collingwood crowd at the MCG can help inspire his team in their AFL semi-final.

The Giants confront the Magpies at the home of football on Saturday. The winner will advance to a preliminary final against Richmond while the losers' campaign will be over.

The MCG expects a crowd of almost 70,000 for the knockout fixture.

The vast majority will be boisterous Collingwood supporters, taking in their side's first final at the MCG in five years.

GWS encountered a similarly hostile environment at the same venue during their 2017 preliminary final against Richmond.

"I didn't play that game but talking to the guys. It's just that everyone is pretty much against you," Cameron told reporters on Monday.

"It's going to be a massive crowd ... we'll have our supporters there but they're very heavily outweighed.

"It's interesting but I think you can just take the Toby (Greene) approach to things and just let it inspire you to play better footy."

Greene was loudly booed by Sydney's fans whenever he touched the ball throughout the final quarter of GWS' elimination final at the SCG.

It wouldn't surprise if the Magpies' supporters produce a similar response to Greene's combative approach and unique kung-fu marking tactics.

"He's one of those guys who doesn't care about it too much. He goes out there and plays footy," Cameron said.

"We saw on the weekend he was definitely one of our better players, if not best on ground, so it gets him up and about .

"They can probably give it to him all he wants and he'll concentrate and play his role."

GWS have played at the MCG twice since losing the 2017 preliminary final to the Tigers.

The expansion club recorded a 16-point win over Collingwood in round two, over five months ago, and ended the regular season with a 45-point loss to Melbourne.

The Giants' inaccurate goal-kicking was one of few blemishes in their resounding victory over the Swans at the SCG, where the winners finished with 10.19 (79).

"Kicking goals under fatigue, it's quite tough ... we're always practising," Cameron said.
