GWS took a step backwards: Leon Cameron

Greater Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron wants his players to spend some time stewing over their 111-point AFL loss to West Coast.

After watching his side take a massive step back in their development, Greater Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron hopes the injection of some fresh players will get the Giants' AFL emergence back on track.

GWS were left licking their wounds after suffering an embarrassing 111-point loss to West Coast in Perth on Sunday.

The Giants were uncompetitive after half-time, with Cameron left to bemoan the lack of fight on display from his fledgling outfit.

GWS won just three games and endured plenty of thrashings over their first two years in the AFL, but 2014 was shaping as a breakout season after they beat Sydney and Melbourne over the opening three rounds.

Although the insipid performance against West Coast left Cameron bitterly disappointed, he knows there were special circumstances.

Five straight games on the road took their toll, while the absence of a host of key players robbed the side of vital class.

Star forward Jeremy Cameron, ruckman Shane Mumford, Adam Treloar and Curtly Hampton are all set to return against Richmond following this weekend's bye.

Even so, Cameron wants his players to stew over their substandard display against the Eagles, before regrouping in time to take on the Tigers.

"I'm confident in our young group, and the players that we're going to get back over the break can inject that enthusiasm back into the team," Cameron said.

"It's a tough season. We understand where we're at - we're a developing side.

"We are going to fluctuate. But we fluctuated too far (on Sunday). We need to be better than that.

"We're not just going to wipe the game under the carpet."

The Giants will be sweating on the fitness of key defender Nick Haynes, who injured his ankle in the opening minutes against West Coast.
