Lowly SV Hamburg have bounced back from their 8-0 mauling last week at Bayern Munich with a 1-0 defeat of fifth-placed Hertha Berlin in the German Bundesliga.
Sweden midfielder Albin Ekdal hit the winner in the 77th minute, turning in a pass from Aaaron Hunt in the penalty area, to give the home side three important points in the relegation fight.
Hertha, who have been poor travellers with only two away wins this season, meanwhile have lost ground on a Champions League spot, staying fifth on 37 points, four points adrift of Hoffenheim.
Third-last Hamburg are now level on 23 points with Wolfsburg, five points ahead of second-last Ingolstadt and 11 clear of basement side Darmstadt.
Florian Niederlechner scored both goals as Freiburg came from behind to win 2-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt in the German football Bundesliga on Sunday.
Frankfurt's fourth successive Bundesliga defeat was another blow for their dwindling Champions League hopes, with Niko Kovac's side left bemoaning a disallowed goal and Niederlechner's winner from an offside position.
Branimir Hrgota gave Frankfurt an 11th-minute lead but a pass from Nicolas Hoefler split the home side's defence and Niederlechner rounded keeper Lukas Hradecky to level in the 25th.
Ante Rebic thought he had headed Frankfurt back in front but the referee ruled keeper Alexander Schwolow had been fouled by Mijat Gacinovic in the six-yard box.
Niederlechner got the points for Freiburg with a neat chip over the keeper just before the hour, but television replays showed he was just offside when he ran onto a pass from Vincenzo Grifo.
Kovac said his team held up physically after a 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld in the German Cup on Tuesday.
"In some situations we didn't have that little bit of luck. I am disappointed with an unnecessary defeat," he said.
Freiburg coach Christian Streich said: "I am very, very happy. We went behind but nevertheless remained stable. That was good to see.
"It was a game that could have ended in a draw, but we had that little bit of luck."
Freiburg move up to eighth on 33 points, two behind sixth-placed Frankfurt, who are in a Europa League berth but six points behind a Champions League spot for next season.
