Hamburg holding referendum on Olympic bid

Hamburg residents will get the last word on whether the German city's bid for the 2014 Olympics will stand in a referendum in November.

Hamburg residents will be asked to ratify the city's bid for the 2024 Olympic Games in a referendum on November 24.

All political parties except the opposition Left Party voted in favour of the referendum, which would endorse Hamburg's bid to become Germany's candidate city.

A vote against the Games would end the bid.

Hamburg was chosen ahead of Berlin by the Germany's National Olympic Committee as its candidate city last March.

A poll commissioned by the committee at the time had 64 per cent of Hamburg's residents backing an Olympic bid. No recent polls have been published.

Hamburg, Boston, Rome, Paris and Budapest have announced bids for the 2024 Games. The deadline is September 15.

The host city will be selected in 2017.
