A hamstring injury will keep boom Melbourne recruit Steven May out of the AFLX tournament, but fans shouldn't be too disappointed with the star defender in no danger of missing the premiership season-opener.
May reported tightness after a drill at the Demons' recent training camp in Maroochydore, with scans confirming he had sustained a low-grade tear.
The former Gold Coast skipper will now miss the AFLX and won't play in the first game of the pre-season competition.
But he said it would have been a routine three-to-four-game hammy if the injury had happened in-season, which will leave him plenty of time to be fit and ready for the Demons' round one clash with Port Adelaide at the MCG.
"The medicos at Melbourne have taken some time to get to know my body and have taken a cautious approach with it," May told reporters on Friday.
"Its not too bad ... it's nothing too serious at all.
"I'm back running already, which is pretty positive.
"... It's probably my body adjusting to the standards here ... they train very hard every session. They have a lot of good runners, which I found out pretty early.
"I've been playing catch up a little bit, but now I'm finally going really well and it's a bit of a bummer to have to miss a few weeks."
May suffered the injury well before Wednesday's AFLX draft, but he was selected by Deadly team captain Eddie Betts after a communications mix-up.
Rival team captain Jack Riewoldt joked that he kicked 10 goals on May last year in a clip that quickly went viral.
May is well aware of the good-natured quip and took it the way it was intended.
"I saw that ... I've actually been tagged on that (on social media) a few times," May said smiling broadly.
"He didn't kick 10 on me, he kicked 10 against us, but Jack's a funny guy and I suppose it was good banter for the draft.
"But now I've had about 30 blokes ask me 'Did he kick 10 on you?', so it's a bit embarrassing.
"... We'll play on each other again soon and hopefully I can keep him under 10 goals."
