Richmond veteran Chris Newman expects Dustin Martin will be fit enough to tackle Sydney.

On Tuesday's evidence, it is a safe assumption.

Martin was put through his paces in a session that lasted approximately 40 minutes at Punt Rd Oval, moving well and booting the ball over 50 metres.

The dynamic midfielder missed the Tigers' last-start AFL win over St Kilda due to a hamstring niggle.

The 23-year-old has been an integral part of Richmond's belated push for a finals berth and enjoyed arguably the best season of his career.

Martin faces a sterner test later in the week, but all signs suggest he will be at ANZ Stadium on Saturday when the Tigers chase a ninth consecutive victory that would ensure they're part of finals.

"I'd expect him to play," Newman said on Tuesday, prior to training.

"His hamstring was a little bit tight and I think they were being a little bit cautious.

"I would think he'll play, but he'll have to get through training throughout the week."

Newman admitted Martin was dearly needed against the ladder-leading Swans.

"He's obviously a really important player for us and we'll be doing everything within our powers to try and get him up for the game," he said.

Martin and Ty Vickery trained away from the main group on Tuesday.

It was more recovery than training for most of the Tigers, who ran a couple of laps and did some stretches before returning to the rooms.

Martin and Vickery's work was more rigorous, the pair completing drills and goal-kicking practice.

Vickery's four-match ban for striking is over, but he faces a tough ask breaking back into Damien Hardwick's side given his lack of match fitness.

"He knows that he let us down and he admitted that," Newman said.

Dan Jackson would have also pushed for a recall, but he was suspended for a late bump in the VFL.
