An opportunistic handbag thief is targeting distracted supermarket shoppers in Melbourne.

Police have released CCTV images of a woman who has stolen a number of handbags from fellow shoppers in Preston and Northcote since January 31.

She has used bank cards from two of the stolen handbags to buy items including cigarettes, and stalked another woman waiting for her to withdraw cash.

The woman is described as Caucasian, in her late 40s, around 160cm tall with a slim build and blonde hair with brown regrowth.
