Wicketkeeper Peter Handscomb will skipper the Victoria Bushrangers for the first time in the 50-over format in the upcoming domestic one-day cup.

Handscomb will deputise for Matthew Wade, who is on international duties.

The Bushrangers named their 14-man squad for the domestic one-day tournament on Wednesday, with quicks Peter Siddle and James Pattinson notable absentees.

The pair are both working their way back to fitness from long-term back injuries, while Siddle is rehabbing an ankle injury.

With Scott Boland, John Hastings and Chris Tremain all on international duties, the Bushrangers will rely heavily on young spearheads Jackson Coleman and Matt Doric.

"Coleman and Doric have shown promising form in both premier cricket and pathway competitions," chairman of selectors Andrew Lynch said.

"(They) will help fill the roles left by our frontline pace attack currently missing through injury and overseas commitments.

"Add to that a solid mix of young allrounders, as well as experienced campaigners like Glenn Maxwell, Cameron White, Bobby Quiney and Dan Christian, and we're set for a really positive month of cricket."

Handscomb returns to the Bushrangers squad after touring with the Australia A side where he captained in the four-day format and scored two centuries.

"It's another great opportunity for Peter to lead a team in a big tournament," Lynch said.

"His experience captaining the Australia A side has been invaluable and I know he's looking forward to the next month."

The Bushrangers kick-off their tournament against South Australia at the WACA on Wednesday, October 5.

Victoria Bushrangers one-day cup squad:

Peter Handscomb (C), Fawad Ahmed, Aaron Ayre, Michael Beer, Dan Christian, Jackson Coleman, Matt Doric, Marcus Harris, Ian Holland, Jon Holland, Glenn Maxwell, Rob Quiney, Marcus Stoinis, Cameron White.
