Hansdotter ends unwanted slalom record

Sweden's Frida Hansdotter, after a record eight runner-up finishes, has won the final women's World Cup slalom before the Winter Olympics in Slovenia.

Swedish skier Frida Hansdotter won the final women's World Cup slalom before the Winter Olympics on Sunday at the Slovenian resort of Kranjska Gora for her first victory after eight runner-up finishes.

The 28-year-old - whose eight second places is a record - beat Austrian sisters Marlies and Bernadette Schild.

Hansdotter, world bronze medallist in slalom in 2013, timed five hundredths of a second faster than Marlies Schild who came into the race already a winner of 35 career slaloms.

America's world No.1 Mikaela Shiffrin timed fastest in the first leg, 32 hundredths faster than Hansdotter, but all hope of a fourth win this season ended when she made an error at the top part of the second leg.

The 18-year-old ended up 72 hundredths off the pace in seventh spot.

Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch remains comfortably atop the overall World Cup standings despite her 23rd place in the slalom.

There was bitter disappointment for the home crowd as defending overall World Cup champion Tina Maze finished two seconds adrift after the first leg and then skied out on the second run.
