Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has called the federal election early, saying Tony Abbott will be Australia's next prime minister.

"Tony Abbott will be elected," she told reporters in Adelaide on Friday.

The South Australian senator said voters should now concentrate on not giving the coalition total control by voting for the Greens in the Senate.

"We've got to make sure he (Tony Abbott) doesn't get absolute power. This is the challenge," she said.

Senator Hanson-Young said the Greens had run an "amazing" campaign in SA, but continued to be disappointed that independent Senator Nick Xenophon had not agreed to direct preferences her way.

"Nick Xenophon has done the wrong thing in this election campaign," she said.

"He is giving Tony Abbott the opportunity to take another seat."
