Dual Geelong AFL premiership winning captain Tom Harley has scored a key off-field role at the Sydney Swans, with his appointment as general manager of football.

Harley, who commences the role on November 3, replaces Dean Moore, who has stepped down after five years.

Former Cats defender Harley accumulated administrative experienced after finishing his 198-game AFL career in 2009.

He held a number of key posts at AFL NSW/ACT, including that of general manager, before leaving that organisation.

Harley, who has also worked as a television commentator, joins an off-field team headed by Swans chief executive Andrew Ireland.

"Tom is a highly regarded person who comes to us with great football experience," Ireland said in a statement issued by the Swans on Thursday.

"He was part of a great club in Geelong throughout a very successful era and was one of the most respected leaders in the game.

"We have worked closely together while he was at AFL NSW/ACT and I think he is a great appointment to what is a very challenging role."

Meanwhile, club icon Adam Goodes is widely tipped to announce at Friday's club best and fairest dinner that he will play on for a 17th senior season.

Goodes 34, the club's appearance record holder with 351 games, was part of the team that suffered a 63-point grand final hiding by Hawthorn last Saturday.

Midfielders Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker and forward Lance Franklin are expected to be among the leading contenders for the best and fairest.
