The alleged double murder of a woman and her seven-year-old grandson in western Sydney has "sickened" NSW deputy premier Troy Grant "to the core".

A 35-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder over the stabbing deaths of his mother and seven-year-old nephew at Lalor Park.

The area is known for its drug problems with locals saying there are up to three ice dealers on any given street.

Mr Grant said the incident was yet "another example of a senseless domestic incident" and an "absolutely horrendous tragedy".

He praised the current efforts to end the state's ice epidemic but said harsher penalties needed to be considered.

"If ice is involved, it paints a stark picture about what we need to do in relation to those people putting the drug out on the street and making it available," Mr Grant told ABC radio.

The 35-year-old man, who is also charged with assaulting police, was formally refused bail on Wednesday with the matter adjourned until November 6.
