Hawks' AFL flight delayed

Six Hawthorn players were stuck at Melbourne airport for about five hours when their flight to Perth had a mechanical problem.

The best laid plans of Virgin and Hawthorn can sometimes go astray.

The Hawks' plans for their AFL preliminary final against Fremantle hit a snag on Wednesday when a flight to Perth was delayed for several hours.

Six Hawthorn players were on the Virgin Australia flight, travelling a day before their teammates ahead of the Friday match at Domain Stadium.

There are reports the flight was delayed by five hours because of mechanical issues.

Captain Luke Hodge, Shaun Burgoyne, Jordan Lewis, Jarryd Roughead, Isaac Smith and emergency Jonathon Ceglar were on the flight.

The plane was supposed to leave at 12.30pm AEST, but apparently was delayed until 5.30pm.

Some Hawks players regularly travel a day early to Perth for matches.

It was already a bad day for Hawthorn, with the club ruling out forward Jack Gunston for Friday's match because of his ongoing ankle injury.
