Too much is being left to Hawthorn star Tom Mitchell at times and Jaeger O'Meara is determined to help his good mate out.

Mitchell had a stunning 50 possessions and laid 13 tackles in the Hawks' 11-point loss to GWS at Spotless Stadium on Saturday night.

Despite Mitchell's heroics, Alastair Clarkson's men were smashed in clearances (51-28) and contested possessions (190-135) by the Giants, who leapfrogged Hawthorn into the top eight with the win.

"We didn't have an even contribution from our midfield group," O'Meara told reporters on Tuesday.

"Obviously Tommy had a really good game, but myself included, we didn't get enough from the rest of the guys."

The Hawks slipped to 10th with the loss, making Saturday night's clash against the resurgent Western Bulldogs a must-win.

O'Meara has played 13 games this season and is still working back towards his best after three years in the football wilderness.

The 24-year-old is still carefully managing his knees after chronic tendon issues sidelined him for his last two seasons with Gold Coast and restricted him to six games with the Hawks last year.

But he's regained confidence in his body to the point where his focus is solely on recapturing the sort of form that saw him claim the Rising Star award in his first full season with the Suns.

"I do set the bar reasonably high," he said.

"I aspire to be the best footballer I can be ... I don't want to lower that bar and be an ok footballer.

"I'm really enjoying my footy. Obviously I haven't played a lot over the last three years or so.

"Sitting in the stands is frustrating and you can get pretty down on yourself, but I'm just really happy to be playing every week.

"Hopefully we can win a few more games and play finals footy."
