Premiers Hawthorn have confirmed the return of their two best players from the 2013 AFL grand final for Sunday's round-21 clash with Fremantle in Perth.

Norm Smith Medallist Brian Lake is back from a four-match suspension while key forward Jack Gunston, Hawthorn's player of the finals series, returns after missing one game with a knee complaint.

Gunston's rapid comeback from injury is timely for the Hawks who have lost 55-goal forward Jarryd Roughead on a one-match tripping ban.

Having dropped Billy Hartung, Hawthorn named their 22-man side on Friday evening, trimming three players from their original 25-man squad.

Hawthorn, Sydney and Geelong all start the weekend in equal-first position with 15-4 win-loss records, with fourth-placed Fremantle two games behind.

Fremantle have recalled Alex Silvagni for injured centre half-back Luke McPharlin, while Tendai Mzungu and the club's 2013 leading goalkicker Michael Walters also return.

Walters had ankle surgery following Hawthorn's win over the Dockers in round three.

North Melbourne's two-time club champion Daniel Wells has been named for Sunday's game against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium. The speedy midfielder played half a game in the VFL last weekend to prove his fitness following a foot injury.

Wells suffered a bruised shin playing for VFL side North Ballarat last weekend but has trained strongly this week.

The 217-game veteran hasn't played an AFL match since round five.

North also regain Levi Greenwood. The Kangaroos have rested teenager Kayne Turner who made his debut last weekend, while Aaron Mullett has been axed.

In a game that could help decide who wins the wooden spoon, 16th-placed Melbourne host 17th-placed Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Sunday.

Melbourne regain Jack Grimes and Christian Salem at the expense of Rohan Bail and Jay Kennedy-Harris.

The Giants have included Nathan Wilson, James Stewart and Mark Whiley.
