Hawthorn are set to announce a new deal which will tie coach Alastair Clarkson to the club until the end of the 2016 AFL season.

The dual premiership mentor has coached the Hawks for nine years and is out of contract after this season.

Hawthorn chief executive Stuart Fox said on Thursday the deal was effectively done.

"He's very, very close. We're just tidying up some paperwork, so there's no issue there," Fox told SEN Radio.

"It will be for three years, but he effectively had one year to run and he's been given a two-year extension."

Clarkson's eventful 129-game coaching career has included the 2008 and 2013 flags and a near-sacking in 2010 after a 1-6 start to the season.
