A day after Jarryd Hayne put on a red San Francisco 49ers cap, the NFL team officially announced the NRL convert had joined them on a three-year deal.

When the Parramatta Eel held a press conference in Sydney on Tuesday he had only given a verbal commitment to the 49ers.

The team was reluctant to trumpet the potential running back or punt returner before he signed a contract, but the paperwork was completed on Wednesday AEDT.

Hayne has signed a three-year undrafted free agent deal, the 49ers confirmed.

Hayne said the team had guaranteed $US100,000, a rare offer for an undrafted free agent and particularly for a 27-year-old who has never played a down in college football or the NFL.

"Hayne comes from an athletic family as his father, Manoa Thompson, is a former professional rugby league player who represented Fiji on the national rugby team," the 49ers said in a statement.
