Hayne won't be frozen out as Blues centre

NSW Origin coach Laurie Daley won't restrict Jarryd Hayne to the left centre corridor as he attempts to reignite his attacking fire against Queensland.

Jarryd Hayne will have a licence to roam in next week's State of Origin opener as NSW coach Laurie Daley acts to ensure his attacking threat is not lost on the left edge.

The hero of the Blues' 2014 drought-breaking series win as fullback, Hayne has been named at centre in his first series since, marking just the second time he will fill the role in his 20-game Origin career.

But Hayne has revealed he won't be restricted to his corridor as the Blues seek every opportunity to score the points required to win at Suncorp Stadium on May 31.

"Laurie has given me the license to roam," Hayne said on Tuesday.

"If I see something, he's got the confidence in me to back myself."

Hayne's best position is fullback but he has filled a similar role before for the Blues' in their unsuccessful 2011 decider.

That match was one of Hayne's most prolific since his debut in 2007. He busted through four tackles and broke the line twice for one try through the middle of the field as he went searching for an opportunity.

And he will be encouraged to do the same thing on Wednesday week if the chance presents itself.

"It's about making plays work when I see something developing or happening," he said.

"You want to make plays for the team and you always want to be the difference maker."

Hayne has played in all positions of the NSW backline but has spent just six games at fullback.

However, it is there he has been most at home, with a winning rate of 50 per cent despite the Blues' tough decade.

He also averaged more metres and tackle busts in his six games there, with the Blues' strike rate dropping to 35 per cent in the 14 games he has played in the centres or on the wing.

But Hayne believes the Blues' growth in his two-year absence meant they are now more likely to be able to create opportunities elsewhere.

"I think now we've got such a balanced team it's on all of us," he said.

"There's a lot of youth in it and the depth is something we haven't had for a couple of years."

Hayne also admitted one of the toughest aspects of his two-year hiatus in the American NFL and Fiji's rugby sevens team was his absence from the Origin arena.

"Every opportunity you get you always want to play Origin," the 29-year-old said.

"It's the hardest game you ever play in, and get ready for hell - that's what it feel like."
