Rachael Haynes is set to be announced as Meg Lanning's replacement to lead Australia in the Women's Ashes.

The batter is expected to beat the likes of Alex Blackwell, Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy to the role when the captaincy is announced on Wednesday, according to cricket.com.au.

Run machine Lanning underwent shoulder surgery in August, with a six-to-eight month recovery time ruling her out of the 2017-18 home summer.

Only returning to the national fray in February, Haynes was a surprise pick to fill in as Australian skipper when Lanning was rested for two group matches during the recent World Cup in the United Kingdom.

They were the only two games Haynes played in that campaign, although the Victorian is tipped to play a big role once the multi-format series commences in Brisbane on October 22.

Australia will play England in three ODIs, a day-night Test and three T20Is.
