Josh Hazlewood says Australia's bowlers will be much improved against Bangladesh at The Oval on Monday, despite their off-colour display against New Zealand.

Skipper Steve Smith described the performance of his attack as ordinary in the washed out Champions Trophy opener at Edgbaston on Friday as the Black Caps chalked up 291 from 45 overs.

Hazlewood's first two overs went for 20, but he bounced back superbly to grab 6-52 from the nine he sent down as New Zealand collapsed from a commanding 4-254 - losing their last six wickets for 37 runs.

The big quick had no complaints with the captain's comments and said the pace men will be better for the run out against Bangladesh in a game Australia must win.

"That's pretty fair," he said.

""I think the first 10-15 overs, we bowled too full and both sides of the wicket and in England you've got to bowl pretty straight.

"We bowled too wide outside off a lot of the time, whether it was short or full. So we'll fix that for next time."

Australia had just one warm-up match since arriving in England, with the only two days of rain the squad have experienced since arriving more than two weeks ago being at Edgbaston when they are due to play.

Monday's hit-out against Pakistan was also washed out and Hazlewood admitted that the bowlers were perhaps a touch underdone.

"We missed that practice match the other day to give a few of those boys a run, so in the end that probably came back to get us," he said.

"But we've obviously got to be better in these shorter tournaments from ball one.

"Coming off the break that I've had, there were probably a few things missing. Rhythm was one, I probably wasn't bowling the ball as hard as I could, you sort of place the ball if you're guessing a bit coming off a long break.

"But we'll be better for the run ... obviously (Mitchell) Starcy hasn't played much recently so I think he'll improve from that hit out."
