Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer has been ruled out for the rest of the AFL season after experiencing another heart scare.

Kreuzer hasn't played since experiencing an abnormally elevated heart rate during the round 17 loss to St Kilda.

The 29-year-old was due to return in Sunday's clash with Fremantle in Perth, but he was withdrawn after experiencing an elevated heart rate at training on Saturday.

"Clearly with a condition of this nature, we need to treat it with caution," Carlton's head of football Andrew McKay said.

"So in conjunction with the specialists and Matthew, we have decided to rule him out for the remainder of the season.

"He will see the cardiologist again this week to determine the next step in his treatment. Importantly, Matthew is OK and all parties are treating this situation with the utmost care."

Defender Caleb Marchbank was another Carlton player who experienced an elevated heart rate issue earlier this year, but the 21-year-old didn't need to miss a game.

St Kilda defender Dylan Roberton collapsed midway through the round four loss to Geelong because of a heart issue, and hasn't played since.

Collingwood rookie Kayle Kirby was also ruled out for the season after suffering an irregular heartbeat, with subsequent tests revealing an underlying heart issue.

Kreuzer is contracted to Carlton until the end of 2019.
