Heartbreak as Aussies fall in dying stages

Australia's under-20s rugby side have fallen by the finest of margins 20-19 to holders England to miss a semi-final spot at the world championships in Georgia.

Australia's under-20s rugby side have missed the semi-finals at the world championships in Georgia in heartbreaking fashion.

Leading defending champions and Six Nations holders England 19-17 with two minutes to play, an overzealous tackle from Harry Johnson-Holmes earned the prop a yellow card.

England kicker Max Malins duly converted the resultant penalty for a 20-19 win.

Sione Tuipulotu scored the only try for Australia and the boot of Harrison Goddard kept them in front for the entire first half but it was a different English side that emerged from the break.

Marcus Street scored the only try of the second term off a rolling maul to give England the lead for the first time in the match. Harry Nucifora edged Australia ahead again 19-17 with a penalty with nine minutes to play but it wasn't to be for coach Simon Cron's side, who needed to either win or draw with a bonus point to make the semi-finals.

"We put ourselves in a position to win it and we didn't, which is not what you want," Cron said.

"We did some really good things defensively, we created some opportunities, but at the end of the day we put ourselves in a position to win and we should have won that, but we didn't."

France will take on New Zealand and England face South Africa in the semi-finals.
