Heavy rain set to flood parts of SA

Parts of South Australia are set to be flooded in what could be the heaviest rainfall event the state has experienced in 40 years.

Heavy rain has drenched parts of South Australia and is set to continue through the weekend, delivering potential flash flooding in some areas.

The weather bureau says up to 120mm of rain has been recorded at several areas near the Northern Territory border.

SA could experience its heaviest statewide rainfall totals for a single event since 1974 as a tropical low moves south during the weekend.

An updated severe weather warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for the Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral regions.

The warning also applies to parts of the Mount Lofty Ranges, Eastern Eyre Peninsula and Yorke Peninsula districts.

Falls of up to 150mm are forecast in the North East Pastoral and Flinders districts, which is likely to lead to flash flooding, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

Locations that might be affected include Oodnadatta, Marree, Roxby Downs, Hawker, Whyalla, Port Augusta and Port Pirie.

Up to 60mm is expected to fall in southeast SA.

The State Emergency Service has deployed a four-person swiftwater rescue team to Port Pirie, about 220km north of Adelaide, to help anyone caught in flash flooding.

Another rescue team is on stand-by in Adelaide.

Residents in affected areas should stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe and avoid driving through flood water, the SES says.
