Helping bats could be fatal: NSW Health

Authorities want people to think twice before coming to the aid of injured or miscarried bats after testing showed some of the animals carry a deadly virus.

They may be cute, but helping a baby bat or flying fox might cost you your life, NSW Health has warned.

As bat breeding season kicks off, people are being warned not to touch young or miscarried pups lying on the ground because they may infect people with the deadly lyssavirus or rabies.

Five bats have been found in NSW carrying the killer infection, which has been fatal in all three Australian cases, NSW Health said on Thursday.
