Hemp is new Vic women's cricket coach

Ex-Glamorgan skipper David Hemp will take charge of Victoria's women's cricket team for the next two seasons.

David Hemp's focus will be on Victoria, not NSW, as he seeks to derail one of Australian sport's most formidable juggernauts.

The NSW Breakers have banked 10 straight women's one-day cricket titles, more often than not defeating Victoria in the final.

Hemp, who represented Bermuda at the 2007 World Cup and captained county Glamorgan in his playing career, has been appointed to stop that trend.

"Obviously NSW keeps cropping up when you talk about women's cricket and where Victoria are," Hemp said on Tuesday, when he was announced as the VicSpirit coach for the next two seasons.

"The important thing for me is to look at us and what we do well.

"VicSpirit is a good side with good players, we've got to keep remembering that. I'm not overly worried about thinking about NSW at the moment."

Cricket Australia will launch the women's Big Bash League this summer, with powerhouses NSW and Victoria to both field two sides.

Hemp isn't concerned about the impact it will have on the state squad.

"Yes it'll be tough ... you're dispensing your best players to both teams," said Hemp, who will coach one of Melbourne's WBBL sides.

"But as a young player, rather than have to wait a couple of years for a spot there will be spots available.

"From a learning experience, it's going to be a great option."

Hemp played 271 first-class matches and scored over 15,000 runs, while he represented Bermuda in 22 one-day internationals from 2006 to 2009.
