Australia's Scott Hend and Wade Ormsby have made enterprising starts to be in contention after round one at the BMW International Open in Germany.
They are both tied for 12th after shooting one-under-par 71s, to be three shots behind Frenchman Sebastien Gros at the Pulheim course.
Hend made a poor start, dropping four shots in his opening 10 holes, including a double bogey on the par-three fourth, before storming back with four birdies in his final six holes to add to the Queenslander's lone birdie on the opening nine.
South Australian Ormsby was flying high until he double bogeyed the last to peg him back.
A shot further behind is Adelaide-born Nick Cullen, who is in a tie for 23rd, after his even par round.
Much of the spotlight though was on Tommy Fleetwood, who closed with a 63 at the treacherous Shinnecock Hills course that matched the lowest round in US Open history last week.
But the world No.10 and tournament runner-up couldn't conjure up his US Open magic as he battled to a two-over-par 74.
The Englishman, whose father Pete is serving as his caddie this week, ended the day equal 55th.
Gros, ranked 104th on the European Tour's points list, headed Spain's Jorge Campillo, Scott Jamieson (Scotland), Englishman Aaron Rai and Henric Sturehead (Sweden) by one stroke.
Spain's Sergio Garcia is tied 35th after shooting a one-over-par 73 to sit alongside Victorian Lucas Herbert.
