Hepatitis warning for gay men in Victoria

Victoria's health department has issued an alert to sexually active gay men after four confirmed cases of hepatitis A in the state.

Sexually active gay men are being warned to watch out for symptoms of hepatitis A, after an outbreak of the highly contagious disease in Victoria and Sydney.

There have been four cases of hepatitis A this year in Victoria, believed to be spread by travellers from Europe who have had male-on-male sexual activity, and several similar cases have been reported in Sydney, the Victorian Department of Health said on Wednesday.

Victoria's deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Brett Sutton said men who had recently travelled to Sydney, Europe or the USA were at higher risk of infection, and he warned them against having unprotected sex as it could spread the virus.
