Hernandez axed from Chile squad

Midfielder Pedro Pablo Hernandez was dropped from Chile's 24-man squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

SANTIAGO, May 24, AFP - Midfielder Pedro Pablo Hernandez was dropped from Chile's slimmed down 24-man squad for the World Cup on Saturday after failing to recover from a leg injury.

He was one of six men axed from coach Jorge Sampaoli's list of 30 players - the others were Enzo Andia, Paulo Garces, Gustavo Canales, Esteban Paredes and Matias Fernandez.

Sampaoli must lose one more man before the June 2 deadline for the final 23-player nominations.

In the Brazil tournament, Chile will face champions Spain, the Netherlands and Australia.

Goalkeepers: Claudio Bravo (Real Sociedad/ESP) Johnny Herrera (Universidad de Chile), Cristopher Toselli (Universidad Catlica)

Defenders: Gary Medel (Cardiff/ENG), Jose Rojas (Universidad de Chile), Eugenio Mena (Santos/BRA), Gonzalo Jara (Nottingham Forest/ENG), Marcos Gonzlez (Unin Espaola)

Midfielders: Arturo Vidal (Juventus/ITA), Mauricio Isla (Juventus/ITA), Marcelo Daz (FC Basel/SUI), Francisco Silva (Osasuna/ESP), Rodrigo Millar (CSD Atlas/MEX), Felipe Gutirrez (FC Twente/NED), Jos Pedro Fuenzalida (Colo Colo), Carlos Carmona (Atalanta/ITA), Jean Beausejour (Wigan/ENG), Charles Arnguiz (Porto Alegre/BRA), Miiko Albornoz (Malmo/SWE).
