Wellington Phoenix have released Carlos Hernandez from his contract the same day he was named in Costa Rica's provisional squad for the World Cup.
The A-League club announced on Tuesday evening that they've parted company with Hernandez by mutual consent.
The 32-year-old striker had signed a new one-year contract at the Phoenix in January, with an option for a second year.
Phoenix general manager David Dome said Hernandez's family had found it difficult to settle in Wellington.
"It is tough for a player when that is the case and the club agreed to his request for a release," Dome said in a statement.
"We congratulate Carlos on his selection to the Costa Rican team for the World Cup and believe his performances for the Phoenix played a part in that.
"The club wishes Carlos all the best for Brazil and in the future."
The 26-man Costa Rica squad included 11 Europe-based players and Hernandez, but not his Phoenix teammate Kenny Cunningham.
Three players will be cut before the World Cup.
Hernandez and Cunningham missed the Phoenix's January 24 match against Brisbane Roar, after the club released the pair so they could push their claims for a World Cup spot in Costa Rica's friendly against Chile.
Costa Rica face England, Italy and Uruguay in Group D at the World Cup, with their first match against the South Americans in Fortaleza on June 14.
