Hewitt advances after win in Cincinnati

Australia's Lleyton Hewitt has booked himself a spot in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters with victory over Austria's Jurgen Melzer.

Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt has opened his Cincinnati Masters campaign with a three-set win over Austria's Jurgen Melzer.

Hewitt dropped the first set and had eight double faults, but bounced back for the 3-6 6-4 6-4 victory in just over two hours on Sunday.

It was his 610th triumph in a career spanning 17 years, passing Bjorn Borg and Yevgeny Kafelnikov for No.19 on the all-time wins list.

The 33-year-old will next face either 15th seed Fabio Fognini or Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France in the second round.

Hewitt will be joined in the main draw by countrymen Marinko Matosevic and Bernard Tomic, who earlier both won their final qualifying matches.

Tomic fired 10 aces to beat fellow Australian Matt Ebden 6-3 7-6 for a first-round clash with Gilles Simon, while Matosevic dispatched Frenchman Adrain Mannarino 6-4 6-4 to face Nicolas Mahut in his opening match.

Matosevic last week withdraw from the Toronto Masters, won on Sunday by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, due to a shoulder complaint before his first match.

Meanwhile American Sam Querrey dismissed Alejandro Falla 6-3 6-1 in just 47 minutes for his 19th win of the season.
